Simpsons Sunday – Counting Down

Hi folks. It’s another Simpsons Sunday and today, we are counting down to the premier of Season 26. Unfortunately we have to get a couple of deaths out of the way, before we can get into the meat of this weeks post.

Comedy and Hollywood has lost two big names this week:Robin Williams and Lauren Bacall. The latter was referenced on the Season 3 episode Like Father, Like Clown. Krusty is saying grace in Hebrew and Hoamer says “he’s talking funny talk.” Lisa tells him that Krusty must be jewish. She then names names such as: Lauren Bacall, Dinah shore, William Shatner and Mel Brooks. Homer then says “Mel Brooks is jewish?” Then Krusty breaks down and thinks about his estranged Father and tells the Simpson family and Milhouse about how he didn’t want Krusty to become a clown. If you would like to watch this episode, it and the rest of Season 3 are on iTunes.

In Robin Williams’s case, he was referenced but never a guest star. It’s too bad, because he would have been great on the show, with his many voices he has done throughout his career, during his comedy routines and movies and TV shows such as Mork and Mindy.

Let us not forget that his mentor was the late great Jonathan Winters, who is a native Ohioan like Nancy Cartwright who voices Bart, Nelson, Wralf Wiggum and others on The Simpsons. She mentions working with Jonathan in her book My Life As A 10-Year-Old Boy and you can find it in both text and audiobook form on iTunes.
Okay, now that we have that out of the way let’s have some fun. Let’s try and predict what will happen this coming season on The Simpsons in the form of logical questions and comments. It will be interesting if Marge does open a sandwich franchise and how it will either succeed or fail. Will Bart’s new teacher be a bully or a cool teacher like Mr. Bergstrom?

Will Homer finally get rich and buy something for the family? or will he spend all the money on Duff Beer? Will Barney try to become sober again and fly a plane or helicopter? Will Lisa finally find her true love and will it stick this time?

Will Nelson protect Bart from a potential bully for a teacher? Will he stil beat up Milhouse? Will Krusty attempt suicide after retiring, again? Will Moe kick Barney out of Moes Tavern for drinking too much beer and not being able to pay for his tab?
Will Principal Skinner be fired again because of something Bart does? Will Maggie finally speak in full sentences, with her first one being “Homer, where’s my damn pacifier?” Will Kent Brockman be fired for saying something particularly controversial during one of his newscasts? Will Ralph Wiggum be taken to the hospital after eating something he shouldn’t? Will Ms. Hoover finally scold Ralph for his odd Behavior and make him cry?

Will Selma and Principal Skinner finally get together and start dating? Will their hobby of Ham Radio be further explored and will they start communicating using two-way handy talkies or bass radios?
I would like to see that because I am a licensed Ham.
Will Ned Flanders find his next possible love of his life this season? Will Homer finally return some of the things he stole from Ned?

Will Frank Grimes Jr show up again and try to attempt to kill Homer?

There are a lot of possibilities of things that could happen this season but will they? It’s hard to say but I’m sure the writers have ideas already set in motion and we will just have to wait. I’m still hoping that Slipknot will guest star as a group with or without masks on or indivituallly unmasked. If they do manage to get on the show, they will be the only characters I have met in real life, as I have stated in an earlier post.

If you have noticed I haven’t mentioned any character deaths. There will be one coming up this season and I refuse to speculate on who it could be. It would be nice to get a spoiler but I don’t think it will happen. All though I would like it because the night of the premier I will be dedicating that Simpsons Sunday post to the character in question. However I’m not expecting to be told who will die and I will not speak about the character death until September 28th.
Congratulations to Harry Shearer for finally winning an Emmy for voicing Mr. Burns. Obviously, this won’t change anything as far as which character will die but I am glad that all 6 main cast members have won an Emmy for voicing a character on The Simpsons.
As usual to end each Simpsons Sunday post, I recommend checking out Chris Ladesma’s blog. He is the Music Editor for The Simpsons and has been since day 1.

Weather Wednesday – The Dog Days Of Summer

Hi there. It is now August 12th and the summer of 2014 is not quite done but the back to school advertisements are on the radio and TV. This post will try and get some life out of summer and the so called lazy hazy tag it has been given in pop culture.

One of the things I looked forward to was going to day camp and roasting hot dogs every Tuesday. The other thing I liked was going on field trips to attractions in Toronto, where I live and was born.

Of course, back then I had no knowledge of anything like Weather Radio or any other way to get the latest weather updates, besides radio and TV. I guess if I actually had a receiver I would have taken it with me and probably annoyed most people with it.

The one time it would have come in quite handy was when we went on overnight trips and my first one was a real bummer. It rained for most of the day and we had to stay in our tents. If I had a Weather Radio I probably would have been able to let others know when the rain would possibly end and what the weather was going to be like in the night time and the next morning, when we had to go back to the day camp.

When I was 13 I tried out as a counselor in training, or CIT. I didn’t like it but looking back on it I wish I’d stuck with it because knowing what I know now I could be a real asset to everybody at whatever day camp I would eventually worked at during the summer. Sure, most people wouldn’t understand but they would eventually see that I am right in not having the day camp out doors for the majority of the day. That was the case with my last day camp I went to. When it rained we went to a near by school and it wasn’t much fun.
Here is one story which I will never forget in my teenage years, which involved weather. In 1988 I was on a camping trip with a group up north in the cottage country regional Ontario, Parke called Killbar park. It was supposed to last from Sunday to Friday but it had rained on and off most of the week and it was also cooler than it had been for most of the summer.

Before hand I had a listen to the long range forecast on the TV through Weatheradio Canada and there wasn’t any indication of heavy rain or any possible flooding. That is what in affect happened on the Thursday and it was not fun having to pack up and leave sooner then expected. If I had known about a Weather Radio receiver I think I would have been more equipped to warn everybody of what could possibly be coming in the weather forecast. Unfortunately, I had no such thing except for my Walkman with an AM/FM radio on it. Need I say more? If I knew then what I know now I could have been a hero but that wasn’t to be.If you have any comments you can reply here or email me at blindgordie@gmail.com and I will get back to you.

Simpsons Sunday – Slipknot On The Simpsons

Hello and welcome to another Simpsons Sunday post. This week I’m going to talk about something that may be a bit premature but I hope it happens. This could also be a sort of part 2 of a previous post on The Simpsons and heavy metal musicians on the show.

If you have read all of my posts you know that one of my favourite bands is the heavy metal band Slipknot. I have also discussed how both the band and The Simpsons speak to me in 2 previous posts. Also, if you have read up on the band, you will know that they are into chaos, when it comes to both studio and live performances. They get right into the music and well, you never know what may happen. There is a likely possibility that they may try and set themselves on fire, literally… I’m not kidding.

There are many possibilities for plots involving the band in an episode. The following is a hodgepodge of semi-random plot ideas which the writers could use or then again, maybe not. I trust them like I trust the band.

They could play a concert in Springfield and could somehow convince either Homer or Bart to come on stage because one of the members is in hospital for a previous on stage accident or something. Before the concert they could be guests at The Simpsons house for dinner and this is how either one of the two possible events could happen on stage. Of course there is also a possibility that one of the members could go to Moe’s Tavern and meet Barney and the other regulars.

Bart could try and pull a prank at the concert or Homer could do something incredibly stupid that lands him in hospital with the also hospitalized member of Slipknot. Lisa could befriend one of the members and try and convince Bart or Homer not to do it and Marge could also be assured that because most of the band are Father’s, nothing bad will happen to either of them, especially Bart. Maybe too annoy Principal Skinner and Groundskeeper Willie all the students from Springfield Elementary school except Lisa could dress up one day in slipknot masks and coveralls.

Maybe if Krusty is still alive he could try and stop the show because of one of the members waring a clown mask. He could also try and put the band on his kids show and make the Clown the main focus. This could also be a promotion for their possible concert in Springfield and maybe even Bill and Marty could interview them on KBBL or Kent Brockman could show up when things get crazy. Maybe even Mr. Burns might try and stop the show because of the band using too much electricity or something. I don’t know.

Let us not forget that we can imagine both Rev. Lovejoy and his wife Helen Lovejoy having something to say about the band playing in Springfield and it may not be flattering. There are so many possibilities for how the band can appear on the show. I now have the new single The Negative One on my iPhone from iTunes and as a slipknot fan, or Maggett, I love the song. My calculation is that this will be the first single and there will probably be a second single, which will be for radio coming out in the next few weeks. Then, in October the new album will come out. I hope that both fans of the show and the band appreciate how much I like them both and would be as happy as Homer with a can of Duff Beer at a Slipknot show, if this happens.

On the birthday front this week, actor Dustin Hoffman celebrated his 77th birthday on Friday. He voiced Mr. Bergstrom in the Season two episode Lisa’s Substitute. This of course goes along with his other many movie and TV rolls, including Rain Man. That movie in particular was used in our drama class in 1993, for the character he played and for other voices he could do.

Weather Wednesday – Floods

Hi all and welcome to another Weather Wednesday.I am going to try and talk about flooding and or flash flooding.
In the Greater Toronto Area we don’t get many severe deluges of rain but yesterday in Burlington Ontario, the rain god’s decided to stop by and visit. Unfortunately the nearest Weather Radio transmitter was not working so those who listened to Weather Radio had to rely on Ham Radio or the internet, along with local radio and TV stations for current severe weather watches and warnings.
Last July Toronto had its own flood event and my apartment building was affected but not enough to impede my movement. However, the same couldn’t be said for people on a Go Train on the Richmond Hill line. They had to be rescued by boats and I’m sure that wasn’t fun for them.
I wonder if this is a trend for flood events to happen each year, once or twice a spring, summer or fall in Canada. For some reason these events happen when it isn’t steaming hot and they are generally unexpected. If a really bad rainfall event happens, are we really prepared for it, like they are in British Columbia? Their rainfall warning criteria is 100 mm in less than 24 hours in the summer and 50 mm of rain in less than 24 hours in winter. Those are the criteria for a rainfall warning. In Ontario it’s 50 mm in the spring summer and fall and 25 mm in the winter. I wonder if that will be amended in the next couple of years, because of these severe rainfall events.
If you have any comments you can reply here or email me at blindgordie@gmail.com and I will get back to you.

Simpsons Sunday – What If?

Hello and welcome to another Simpsons Sunday. This week I’m going to spout some random thoughts and pose questions, which I have had for a while but never had a chance to put anywhere. I don’t know if people have even thought of some of these things but here they are.
What if Homer was suddenly blind? How would he manage with his current personality and his three children? Would Bart be the same as he is now, while Homer has full eyesight? Would Bart tone things down somewhat, if Homer suddenly loses his eyesight? How would Bart’s sibling rivalry with Lisa change as a result? How would his friends such as: Moe, Barney, Lenny and Carl treat him? Would he even be able to keep his current job at the Springfield nuclear power plant? I’m just asking here!
What if Krusty The Clown revealed himself actually to be Homer? Would Bart still respect him? Would Bart suddenly turn against him or would he be even more involved with Krusty’s TV show? This was discussed in varying degrees in interviews with the producers and it could have been a real fun final episode… maybe.
If Sideshow Bob ever suddenly dies unexpectedly, who would be Bart’s ultimate enemy? Would Sideshow Mel suddenly turn on Krusty and frame him too? If that ever happens, would Bart and Lisa figure it out, all over again? Hmm!
If Nelson wasn’t Bart’s original nemesis at school, would Jimbo, Kearney and Dolph have teamed up to bully Bart regularly? Would have Nelson been one of Bart and Milhouse’s protectors instead? Would it have been as funny? Probably not… then again, maybee if all things work.
If Lisa didn’t become a vegetarian would the show still have survived until now? I think so but the plots for episodes focusing on it would be different. Actually, it was hinted at this character change in the episode Lisa’s Wedding, during Season 6
Would The Simpsons allow Yeardley Smith to use Lisa’s voice as an audio tester? If Lisa was allowed to she could have or could still use her voice to test out stereo speakers. If you listen to the timber it would be perfect for testing out both the bass and treble.
If Marcia Wallace hadn’t passed away last October, would Mrs. Krabappel have continued as Bart’s fourth grade teacher throughout the rest of the series? It would be interesting to see what plots that could have been hatched if she was still alive today.
What if Lisa hadn’t met Bleeding Gums Murphy in the episode Moaning Lisa? Would she eventually loose interest in her saxophone or would she continue being blue throughout the rest of the series run? Bleeding Gums Murphy didn’t last very long on the show but it is interesting to wonder what would have become if Lisa didn’t hear him playing his horn. After all, he did make an impact on her life but he wasn’t the only one outside the family to do so, as you will see below.
If Mr. Bergstrom had become a reoccurring substitute teacher how would Bart and his class react to his teaching style? Woodbark be jousting as much with him as he did with Mrs. Krabappel? Again, it is interesting and there may hopefully be a chance that we could find out one day. Of course Lisa took to him and his teaching style and was understandably devastated when he left on the train for the projects in Capitol City.
If Frank Grimes turned out to actually like Homer, would he become a reoccurring character on the show? Probably yes and maybe they would have become really close friends. Obviously, we know how things turned out so let’s leave that alone.
If Ned Flanders hadn’t played more of a Fatherly roll in Bart’s life in The Simpsons Movie, would Bart have drank more whiskey, despite Marge ordering him to stop? Also, what if Homer did not win the truck? How would have the family escaped to Alaska? What if Russ Cargill had shot Homer but not killed him, before Maggie dropped a boulder on his head? Also, what if Bart hadn’t skateboarded naked to Krusty Burgers? Would Homer have met Spider Pig?
These are questions and some thoughts I have been living with for a while and well, we may never know the answer to some of them. But it is fun to consider what could have become if things were different with certain characters on the show.
On the birthday front, Metallica singer and guitarist James Hetfield turns 51 today. Him and the rest of Metallica were guest stars on the Season 18 premier episode The Mook, The Chef, The Wife And Her Homer. James writes most of the lyrics and music, along with drummer Lars Ulrich and occasionally lead guitarist Kirk Hammett. One of James’s lines in the episode was “we don’t take rides from strangers” after Otto sees them and offers them a lift, after Bart hijacks the school bus.
One of the bands Metallica influenced has released a new song on Friday. Slipknot has put out a new song via their website called The Negative One and it’s just killer. I know it has nothing to do with The Simpsons but it does have everything to do with my wish to have Slipknot guest star on the show at some point. Maybe they can play a concert in Springfield and Bart somehow gets into the mosh pit with Homer. Then again, Bart may do something to bring the concert to a chaotic ending, with one of his practical jokes that go very wrong. It’s just a thought!
