My New Favorite Character

Hi and welcome to another Simpson’s Sunday. This week I’m going to talk about the half-brother of Homer Simpson, Herb Powell. I recently downloaded his 2 key episodes onto my iPod touch: Oh Brother, Where Are Val? And Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes?

Herb is voiced by Danny DeVito, who is a great actor in his own right. Since watching the two episodes and paying particular attention to the character himself, I have come to realize that Herb is much like the Man I wanted to be. I dreamed of having a lot of money and a great job and of course, being the coolest uncle. In my opinion, Herb Powel is most certainly that, the coolest uncle. He loves the kids and let’s Bart and Lisa do whatever they want in his house, despite Marge’s fear of the kids being spoiled. He even allows Homer to design his next invention which is a car called The Homer, which ruins him and loses him his home and his possessions. What really stands out for me about Herb is that he doesn’t seem to like formality as much. For example: he doesn’t like being called uncle Herb and asks Bart and Lisa to call him Unky Herb. Actually, the latter sounds cooler and I like that.

I also like the fact that despite his continuing antipathy towards Homer, he does forgive him in the end for bankrupting him and his company, after he gets rich again with his New invention, the baby translator. If that was a real life invention, I think every mother in the world would want that. Actually, if there was such a thing as an animal translator I would love that, especially if I was to get a seeing eye dog in the future. much like Brian in Family Guy, I can’t communicate well with animals because they don’t speak our language. In fact the only nonverbal language I know at all is sign language and with that I only know three words: yes, no and angry.

Anyway, at the end of Herb’s second appearance on The Simpsons, he buys Marge a new washer and dryer and Homer is vibrating chair that he wanted. He also gets the books for Lisa that she wants and Bart a membership with the NRA, when he is old enough to get the machine gun he wanted. that just goes to show that if you have enough money you can almost spoiled the people that you love with things that they want.

Tonight is the next installment of the annual Treehouse Of Horror Halloween Special and this one features the Tracy Ullman era Simpson’s with the current Simpson family. This means that we get to hear and see both incarnations of the Simpson family. We get to hear the current voices and the voices back when they were on the Tracy Allman shorts. I think it will be interesting to hear Homer as Walter Matthau again, compared to how Homer sounds now. Don’t you think?

As usual to end each Simpsons Sunday post, I recommend checking out Chris Ladesma’s blog. He is the Music Editor for The Simpsons and has been since day 1.
I also recommend checking out Yeardley Smith’s blog at
I should also mention Marchez Vous, which is her women’s shoe designer company, which she started earlier in the decade. You can check out their website at
For some strange reason everyone I know hasn’t heard of them yet. Hopefully I can change that.
You can also comment here or you can email me at and I will reply as soon as I can to all messages I receive. I would much prefer getting an email so I can reply directly to you, but that’s just me.
One final thing to mention is that you can follow Simpsons Executive Producer Al Jean on Twitter and his Twitter handle is @AlJean.
He has ran the show since Season 13 and has ran it during Seasons 3 and 4.
Anyway, that is it for this weeks post. Talk to you again on Weather Wednesday.
