Mr. Bergstrom And Herb Powell

Hi folks and welcome to another Simpsons Sunday. This week I’m going to talk about the similarities between 2 characters who were introduced in Season 2: Mr. Bergstrom and Herb Powell. When you think about it they are different from each other but have a lot of things in common, when it comes to the Simpson family.

For one thing, they are both friendly to the kids and in Mr. Bergstrom’s case, encourages his class to make fun of his name if they like. They both are emotional but in different ways. Mr. Bergstrom is softer and Herb has a short temper, like his baby brother.

The two share the distinction of only appearing in a hand full of episodes, either as a picture or mentioned character and Mr. Bergstrom appears in Lisa’s Substitute and Herb appears in: Oh Brother, Where Are Thou, Brother Can You Spare 2 Dimes? and briefly in
the Changing Of The Guardian with speaking lines.

What if they both appear in the same episode? That would be a very interesting combination with the Simpson family and The cast of secondary, tertiary and possible one time characters. I would think it would be intersting if Mr. Bergstrom was Bart’s substitute teacher. How would he react to the antics of Bart and his class mates? Would Homer make a fool of himself in front of Lisa again, while in Mr. Bergstroms presence? What if both Herb and Mr. Bergstrom actually meet?

Well, both actors who voice their respective characters are still around and maybe, just maybe some or all of these questions could be answered in the future. It would be nice for Lisa to be overjoyed again and for Bart and everyone else in the Simpson family to see Unky Herb again too.

On the birthday front, happpy birthday to classic Simpsons writer George Meyer, who turned another year older on Friday. Also, happy birthday to Simpsons music writer Alf Clausen, who turned 74 yesterday.

Spring Is Here. Really?

Hi there and welcome to the first Wednesday of Spring of 2015. I know it’s actually spring but it doesn’t really feel like it yet. So, are you really surprised, if you live in Southern Ontario?

I have been gravitating towards reading the farmers almanac since last year and I find that for the most part, they’ve been right. The only thing is that they really aren’t as specific with temperatures as I would like them to be.

This gets to the main message in this weeks Weather Wednesday post, which is that I’m not at all surprised that it is still winterlike in Southern Ontario and it may start to warm up in ernest, around April 15th or so. At least, that is what I am thinking and of course hoping will happen. When winter has been as cold as it has been in Southern Ontario and no January thaw has occurred it really isn’t surprising that we are still stuck in winter, when it is clearly spring according to the calendar. Hopefully this year we have a summer, unlike last year but I guess time will tell.

Well, that’s all I have for this week. If you are reading this and you were licensed ham radio operator, please check into my weekly Weather Radio Net on Monday evenings. It has gone well so far and has resulted in a number of new additions to the mailing list from my Weather Radio Listeners Newsletter. I will hopefully be doing the net for a while and also hoping to get guests on with me to talk to everyone about their Field of expertise.

If you would like to sign up to be put on the mailing list just send me an email at wxrnewsletter@gmail.com and I will send you all the back issues and you will of course, receive all future issues for as long as you are on the mailing list. Well, that’s about it. Talk to you next week.

The Smashing Pumpkins

Hi folks and welcome to another Simpsons Sunday. In the last few weeks I have been rediscovering how much I like the classic period of The alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. They of course are lead by primary songwriter, guitarist and front man Billy Corgan. He turned another year older on Tuesday and guest starred in the season seven episode Homerpallooza. This came while promoting their most successful album Melancholy And The Infinite Sadness, which happens to be a double album. Hmm, it also happens to be turning 20 on October 24th. Maybe I will do something for the blog or maybe someone else will write something about the album in their own blog, which I will put a link to here.

My favourite three albums are: Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, Siamese Dream and the 1998 electronically flavered Adore, which came out on June 2nd, my 25th birthday. I like them all for their diversity and in particular, the range on Mellon Collie, from very hard metallic rock with distorted vocals to gentle acoustic songs, with either guitar or keyboards driving the songs.

As a fellow guitarist I admire Billy for his riffs and for how he approaches each song differently on each album. I also respect him for his ability to write all sorts of songs and to rearrange some of them for a live setting. For example: the song Disarm has been played both acoustically and electrically by the band livesince 1993, when it came out on Siamese Dream.

Another thing you can’t deny is Billy’s love for classic rock bands like: Cheap Trick, Queen, Black Sabbath, The Cars, Missing Persons and even newer bands like The Cure. The classic line up of: Billy Corgan on lead vocals, guitar, bass and piano, James Iha on second guitar, lead and backing vocals, D’arcy Wretzky on bass and lead and backing vocals and Jimmy Chamberlin on drums and lead and backing vocals is to me, the definitive Smashing Pumpkins. I will be generous and give a pass to the second line up including the three original members plus Melissa Auf der Maur on bass, who joined in 1999, to tour with the band on The Sacred And Profane tour supporting Machina – The Machines Of God released on February 29th 2000. She helped the band through the tour leading to their break up at the end of the year. Everything since their 2007 album Zeitgeist sounds like them but there is a difference because of the players involved and things are different now. Oh, I should also make mention with the brief edition of Melissa Auf der Maur The band became one quarter Canadian because she is from Montreal Quebec. She previously played with Courtney love in the band Hole and now has her own band simply called Auf der Maur, with their most well known song Follow The Waves in 2004. She also turned another year older on March 17th but didn’t appear on The Simpsons. However she has done some acting in some little known movies. Just look her up on Wikipedia and there is more to her than what I have mentioned here. I hope that her and Billy are still friends!

I sure do miss the original Pumpkins but things aren’t all smooth between former members of the band and Billy except for Jimmy, who went with him to his other band in 2003 and participated in the 2007 reunion but left into thousand nine, seemingly with no bad blood between the two. I hope that the original members can patch things up if and when they are nominated for induction into the rock ‘n roll Hall of Fame. It would be interesting to see who inducts them and if the original band reunites for the occasion and well, hopefully kisses and makes up long enough to play a few songs from the first few albums. I guess time will tell.

One thing that both Billy and myself share is our shaved heads. I started having my head shaved around the same time he shaved his own head. I had it done for me up until 1997 when I started doing it myself and I have had the balled head ever since. Oh, I have even had people touching my balled head and well, I’m not going to lie, I love it.

Weather Radio Net Returns To Ham Radio

Welcome to another Weather Wednesday post, this time on a Monday. The reason being is tat there is a new Ham Radio net coming back today. Okay, you may be asking why I said a new net is coming back? Well, I’ll tell you in this blog post.

The original Weather Radio Net was started on June 9th 2012 and it was active up untill December 12th 2013. The main topic was of course Weather Radio but I also allowed for other discussions. Such as: VHF marine radio and weather spotting such as CANWARN and SKYWARN. We even had a combined net on December 1st 2012 with an American net, which is a hurricane prep net and it went quite good with many check ins by voice and text.

Sadly, it all ended in December 2013 because of a sharp drop in checkk ins and relationships breaking down with some people who had helped me in the past. However, despite this the net has been revived and is starting this evening at 7:00 PM ET and it meets for an hour. If you are a scanner listener bug your local Ham Radio operator to connect to IRLP reflector 9038 on a repeater which has IRLP capabilities. IRLP stans for Internet radio linking project, just so you know.

Well, that’s about it for this weeks Weather Wednesday post. I will not be blogging on Wednesday because of this entry today. If you are a ham and you are reading this I hope to hear you this evening. I will also be tweeting live @WxrNewsletter during the net.

Goodbye, Thank You And RIP Sam Simon

Hi there and welcome to another Simpsons Sunday. This week I’m going to say goodby and thank you to Simpsons Cocreator Sam Simon, who passed away on Monday at the age of 59 of terminal colorectal cancer. I never had the chance to meet him but the news of his death hit me pretty hard.

I didn’t only like what he did for The Simpsons but I was also a fan of his work with George Carlin on The George Carlin Show in 1994. I only watched a few episodes but I liked the show, I guess primarily because it was George Carlin’s creation but also because Sam Simon had his fingerprints on it as well.

To give you an idea of how much input he hadn’t to the creation of the Simpsons characters, if he hadn’t called Harry Shearer we probably wouldn’t have had Mr. Burns as we hear him today. Also, if he hadn’t contacted Hank Azaria we probably wouldn’t have been able to hear Moe or Apu as we know them today. He has admitted to being combative but despite this quallity he has given us many years of laughs in and outside The Simpsons. Thank you Sam Simon for everything you have given everyone who has known you or of you. RIP. Let us all be nice to the next animal we meet, to Honor Sam.

On a lighter note, it was 28 years ago on Friday, that Nancy Cartwright audition and got the role of Bart Simpson, when the Simpsons Shorts were on the Tracy Ullman show.

On the birthday front, happy birthday to long time voice actor Frank Welker, who turned 69 on Thursday. He has done much work over the years, besides animal noises on The Simpsons. Remember the show Inspector Gadget? He voiced Dr. Claw with his ending line “I’ll get you Gadget…. next time… next time.”

Also, happy birthday to long time Simpsons animator David Silverman, who turns a year older… well…. today. He guested on an episode of Season 26 and I will leave that to you to find out which one it is.

False Spring

Hi there and welcome to another Weather Wednesday. This week I’m going to sortof continue on the topic I was on last week. This time I’m going to focus on the weather teasing us, when it becomes so springlike we think it is here to stay. Then in a day or so, it goes right back to winter. This is what I call and some well known weather people have called a false spring. I have two examples of years when this occurred that I will talk about here to give you an idea of this rather puzzling and potentially dangerous phenomenon. Also, both examples have happened in Southern Ontario in 1995 and 2003.

In 1995 around now, the weather suddenly warmed up unexpectedly to temperatures you would expect in May for about 4 or 5 days. The weather was only forecasted to warm up to about 11 or 12 C. and that was it. We saw the mercury shoot up to around 21 C. for hi’s and lo’s around 1 or 2, all under clear skies and light winds. It stayed above freezing during the day untill April 4th, when the temperatures plummeted from 7 C. in the morning to a very unseasonably cold minus4 during the day. This was complete with rain changing to snow and for the next few days, temperatures ever so slowly recovered to the teens and 20 C. by June setting the stage for a hot and sometimes stormy summer.

In 2003 we had another false spring which occurred after a very cold winter, with the weather warming up to 9 or 10 C. and at one point, going up to 19. Once again, this occurred around this date in March and it wouldn’t go below freezing until April 3rd, with a freezing rain warning issued and almost a day of it and some snow falling. This time the refreeze starts with the mercury going no higher than 0 and staying steady, then returning to below freezing during the night and day, with hi’s near minus 1 or 2 and lo’s near minus 5 or 6. Once again, temperatures would recover to more seasonal conditions but this time the warm up was faster, with hi’s in the double digits from April 12th to April 15th. On this day the hi was 27 with lo’s around 5 or 6 and hi’s next day steady near 3 or 4.

The bizarre thing about both of these false Springs is that if you were a hockey fan and a fan of the New Jersey Devils, they won the Stanley Cup both years. I don’t understand it but it really is a bizarre phenomenon. I know, I know…. you can laught all you like but it’s all true. This year the weather has warmed up suspiciously after another very unrelenting cold winter, giving parts of Southern Ontario below freezing temperatures throughout the entire month of February and almost freezing Lake Ontario. Will we go through another false spring in 2015? I guess we will have to wait and see. The farmers almanac says that we may get one more snowfall before March is done and the weather may stay rather cool through the first part of April, turning warmer by months end. Let’s wait and see what happens and if this holds true to both the patterns and farmers almanac.

If you have any comments you can reply here or email me at blindgordie@gmail.com and I will get back to you.

“Ah, Sideshow Bob”

Hi folks and welcome to another Simpsons Sunday and the first one for March 2015. Today, let’s talk about Sideshow Bob and his best moments throughout the series.

For me, I actually like his debut episode he appeared in, which was Season 1’s Krusty Gets Busted. I think that introducing him as the writers did was briliant. Could you ever suspect someone as intelligent as him to have an ugly signed? Well, I guess that some really smart people are really evil. I mean, think of all the people who have become such well known serial killers and mass murderers over the years and all the planning that took place before the crimes were committed. I can’t really imagine myself doing anything like that. Besides, I’m just a real softy. Anyway, as we all know Bart and Lisa uncover his plan and Krusty is set free and Bob is taken to jail. Of course he also vow’s revenge on Bart, especially.

Now, that is my favourite episode because it is the introductory episode which shows us the character for the first time. However, later episodes aren’t bad either because they develop the character further, to be charming without much of a hint of evil. For example: Season 3’s Black Widower shows us this aspect of Sideshow Bob and only Bart see’s through this mask of charm, to discover that he is going to kill Selma, taking advantage of her lack of a sense of smell.

To most people, Sideshow Bob’s best episode of all time is Cape Feare and I can’t really disagree with that. It is quite fun and Bob gets some of the physical comedy which is usually reserved for Homer. For example: Bob stepping on rakes and being stampeded by a hurd of elephants. The best part is when he sings the entire H.M.S. Pinafore, as a last request for Bart before he kills him. Of course, he doesn’t get the chance as he is arrested and Cheif Wiggum says “bake him away toys” and either Lou or Eddie ask “uh, what chief?” Cheif Wiggum says “uh, do what the kid says” in reference to Bart sayin “take him away boys” and Cheif Wiggum saying “hay, I’m the Chief here.” From the first time I watched that episode I never forgot those lines.

As for his later episodes, I like The Bob Next Door, as he poses as another cell mate of his named Walt Warren and buys the house next to the Simpsons. It would have been nice if Bob had actually moved in as himself but it probably wouldn’t have been as funny and the fact that Bart once again suspected it was him all along also made for good comedy. His latest appearance wa in the episode Blazed And Confused in which he makes a brief appearance talking to Mr. Lason, after he is throw’n in jail with him.

On the birthday front, I am very very sorry in not mentioning a milestone birthday in the Simpsons family, in the shape of Kelsey Grammer who turned 60 on February 21. He of course, voices Sideshow Bob and also portrayed Dr. Frasier Crane on both the shows Frasier and cheers. He is always working and if you look him up on bothS Simpsons Wiki and on Wikipedia, you will see what I mean.
