Hi folks and welcome to another Simpsons Sunday. Okay, this weeks post is actually part 3 of the Christmas 2015 posts and last weeks post was actually supposed to be part 2 of this years Simpsons Christmas posts. However, I had other things I felt needed to be said in it, thus the title of last weeks blog post. So, this is actually Part 3 of my Simpsons Christmas posts for 2015. This week it is all about the episode Holidays Of Future Passed because I like this episode and there are some things about it that are interesting to me that I want to share with you.
In this flashForward episode, the Simpson family are in the year 2041 and Bart is divorced from his wife Jenda, Who appeared in an earlier FlashForward episode Future Drama. Meanwhile, Lisa is finally married to Milhouse and he is dealing with his hay fever. So, Milhouse suggests taking her daughter Zia to see Homer and Marge, along with Bart taking his two boys to see them.
At some point Homer takes his grandsons out to see their great-grandfather, who is cryogenically frozen, Yet still alive. Zia escapes to the UltraNet to get away from her mother. Lisa complains about her daughter being rebellious, like her brother. She and Bart meet in the treehouse and talk about their problems with their children and find that they both need to try harder to be better parents. Bart also admits in a drunken state, that she is the person he always wanted to be.
Bart goes looking for his boies and Lisa goes into the UltraNet to find her daughter. When she finds her, Zia admits that she does look up to her mother and they reconcile. One Bart finds his boys with Homer he tells them he will be a better father to them and they also reconcile.
As for Maggie, she is in a successful band and in the late stages of pregnancy and on the way to the Simpsons house, she has contractions and is taken to the hospital by former bully Kearny. At the end of the episode she gives birth to a girl and does not speak a word throughout this episode.
That is only the basics of the episode and For more on the story and neet tidbits about the production, check out this link. http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Holidays_of_Future_Passed
I wish to point a couple things out that may not be obvious on the first watch or listen. Lisa’s daughter Zia is actually voice by Yeardley Smith, who also voices Lisa Simpson, herself. Another thing I should mention is that Yeardley subconsciously goes into her own speaking voice, which is not very different from her voice for Lisa. This is when Lisa talks with Bart and goes into the UltraNet to save her daughter. What clinched it for me was the line “Google… even though you’ve enslaved half the world, you’re still a damn fine search engine.” I immediately recognized her cadence, from an interview she did on Fox back in 2009, before recording Season 21. She was asked about being a connoisseur of cupcakes and she mentioned her favorite cupcake being a strawberry cupcake from Sprinkles. She also pointed out that strawberry cupcake is not her favorite. So for it to be her favorite “it has to be a damn fine cupcake.” If you can find this interview on YouTube like I did and then listen to the episode you know why it’s stuck with me. I found it back in the spring of 2013, a year and a half before I downloaded and purchased The episode from iTunes.
Like Yeardley Smith, I am also a big fan of cupcakes and my favorite is chocolate, no matter where it was made. I also love my donuts, muffins, coffee and or hot chocolate from my local Tim Hortons donut shop. If you don’t know about them, I suggest giving it a try and especially give their coffee and donuts a taste. I’m sure you will like them, along with their hot chocolate. Just Google Tim Hortons and I’m sure you can find a location near you, almost anywhere around the world. They are almost as ubiquitous as other donut shop franchises.
On the birthday front, Harry Shearer turns another year older on Wednesday. He of course voices characters such as: Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Smithers, Principal Skinner, Otto Man, Kent Brockman and many other major and minor characters. Of course, you can check his radio show out on various apps such as TuneIn and Soundcloud. I am so glad he did not ultimately leave the voice cast because it would be difficult to replace his voice with others in various character rolls. Maybe you could replace Mr. Burns and maybe Ned Flanders with the right person but it wouldn’t be the same. So, I’m just happy that Harry has decided to stay on as a cast member.
Well that’s about it for this Simpsons Sunday post. In the mean time, I recommend checking out Chris Ladesma’s blog. He is the Music Editor for The Simpsons and has been since day 1.
