A Year to the Day

A year ago today is when Rogers went down and millions of customers were left to fend for themselves. I was one of them, but in a way I was luckier than most.

The trouble started around 5:00 AM when I was going into my bookmarks in safari, in order to read an article I wanted to read at the time. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do anything on the internet because I had just lost it. Not only that, but also being able to call someone on the phone.

Despite this, my day went on, with me going grocery shopping. Then, another roadblock in that I couldn’t pay for anything, as I couldn’t connect to my grocery store’s internet and there for, was unable to purchase anything, even with my debit card. Here is where luck was on my side, when the lady at the cash had discovered this, she allowed me to get my groceries, provided I came in next time and I would pay for them, along with my next order. She knew me and knows that I am honest and a regular customer so, I was lucky in this rather chaotic situation. So, I went home and did what I had to do, namely laundry and miraculously when I got back upstairs to my apartment, I had Internet, but only temporarily. However, I was lucky enough to go through all my emails and watch some YouTube, before I lost it again for a few hours. Then, later on in the evening everything was alright again. I called my mother the next morning and told her, why I couldn’t phone her yesterday and I think she understood. She is hopeless when it comes to anything to do with computers, the internet, social media and smart phones!

I was really lucky to have people on my side, but others who had to deal with the Rogers outage may not have been and I certainly hope that this does not occur again for a long time. It is a year to the day of this happening, but it could happen again and maybe with not only Rogers, but other companies in Canada could also suffer the same temporary fate of an outage. There was no bad weather where I live and every other phone and internet company was plugging along without a care in the world. Could this happen again? Quite possibly and hopefully not. What if it does? Will there be another meeting with the federal government of Canada and wireless providers? Also, what will happen in the future if this happens again? Could this be a longer outage the next time?

I haven’t forgotten about the events which had occurred one year ago and I never will, as this could have been catastrophic had the weather been a factor. Thankfully it wasn’t and it involved human error, probably like other outages from this company. I have been a customer for nearly 21 years and I have no intention of changing to another carrier as yet. However, things could be different due to events beyond my control and we will just have to wait and see, how things play out. My phone contracct will be up by the end of October and then I can decide what’s next. I have no plans at the moment so, I will just take it a day at a time and cross that bridge when I get to it.
